A Few Home Remedies To Ease Your Dental Pain
Pain in and around the teeth and jaws is called a toothache. It can be caused by tooth decay, an infection, loose or broken fillings, or gums that pull away from the teeth. If the pain lasts more than a day or two, you should see a dentist right away to get it fixed. Until then, the following simple home remedies made from things most people already have at home may help ease the pain temporarily:
1. Gargle With Saltwater
One of the best home remedies is to gargle with saltwater. You can get rid of food stuck in cavities or between teeth by rinsing the mouth with warm salt water. It may also reduce swelling, speed healing, and make a sore throat feel better.
You can make a saltwater rinse by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swishing it in your mouth for 30 seconds. This can be done as many times as you need.
2. Ice Pack Or Cold Pack
When an injury or swollen gums cause a toothache, a cold compress or ice pack can help ease the pain.
A person can try holding an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas against the outside of the cheek above the painful tooth for a few minutes.
By narrowing the blood vessels, a cold treatment slows blood flow to the affected area. This helps ease the pain and reduce swelling and inflammation.
Throughout history, garlic has been used a lot as a medicine. It has powerful antibacterial properties because it has a chemical called allicin.
Pain from a toothache can be temporarily relieved by over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Children younger than 16 should not be given aspirin.
First, fresh garlic should be crushed. Then, it should be mixed with a little salt and put on the tooth.
5. Tea With Peppermint
Like cloves, peppermint can make your mouth feel numb and relieve a toothache. Peppermint has a minty taste and smell because it has menthol in it. Menthol is also known to kill bacteria.
You can steep one teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for 20 minutes. After it has cooled, you can swish it in your mouth and either spit it out or swallow it.
You can also hold a slightly warm, wet tea bag against the tooth for a few minutes until the pain disappears. As a quick fix, you can also put a cotton ball with a few drops of peppermint oil on it against the tooth that hurts.
Thyme is a medicine that works well for treating chest infections like bronchitis and whooping cough. The main part of the essential oil is thymol, which kills bacteria and fungi.
A mouthwash can be made by putting one drop of thyme essential oil in a glass of water. You can also put a few drops of thyme essential oil and water on a cotton ball. After you add the water, press it against the tooth that hurts.
7. Aloe vera
Aloe vera gel, found in succulent plant leaves, has been used for a long time to treat burns and small cuts. Some people now clean and soothe their gums with the gel. Studies have shown that aloe vera kills bacteria and can eliminate the germs that cause tooth decay. The gel should be put on the sore part of the mouth and massaged gently.
8. Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
When a toothache is caused by an infection, rinsing with a hydrogen peroxide solution effectively kills bacteria in the mouth. Hydrogen peroxide can hurt you if you swallow it, so you must be careful when rinsing.
It should be made by mixing 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts and swishing it around in the mouth for about 30 seconds. After you spit it out, you should rinse your mouth with plain water several times.
It would help if you never swallowed a hydrogen peroxide rinse, and children shouldn’t use it either.
Cloves are an Indonesian spice that comes from the Maluku Islands. They have a chemical called eugenol, which works as a natural painkiller. Cloves can also reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. It can help fight infections in the teeth and gums. A small cotton ball can be soaked in clove oil and put on the area where the painful tooth is.
You can also use dried whole cloves. Chew a whole clove gently to get the oil out, then hold it against the tooth for up to 30 minutes.

These home remedies are only meant to help for a short time. If you have a toothache lasting more than a day or two, you should see a dentist immediately.
If you don’t take care of tooth pain immediately, it could lead to more serious issues like gum disease or an abscess. An abscess happens when bacteria enter the dental pulp, which is the soft part of the tooth.
The best way to avoid getting a toothache or an abscess is to take care of your teeth and gums as best you can. You can do this by doing the following:
- Plaque can be reduced by using fluoride toothpaste twice daily for two full minutes each time.
- Eating and drinking less sugar.
- Regular use of dental floss or an interdental brush helps remove plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.
- Not smoking can make dental problems worse. Getting regular dental checkups.
- If a toothache lasts more than a few days, a person should go to the dentist for advice and treatment.
